Photo Transfer Tips  Smatchey Memorial 445.jpg (29416 bytes)

Supplies

Jacquard "Print on Cotton" and/or "Print on Silk"

Inkjet color printer

Sobo glue

Synthrapol SP or light textile detergent

Start with the very best picture you can find and like for the occasion and one that will fit on your gourd.  Practice getting that picture onto a regular sheet of paper before you start using the "cotton" or "silk" transfer sheet.

bullet

I suggest trying both of these products, print out 2 or 3 copies of your photo onto both cotton and silk.  Use some scrap gourd to practice on and find the best result for you.

bullet

Print out pic on the cloth side of the transfer paper.  Let dry for 24 hours, although it is dry to the touch and doesn't smear in a very short time.

Prepare your gourd, finding a good place for your transfer and make sure the surface is smooth to the touch, even if you need to sand some of the surface.  This will make it easier to keep all bubbles from forming under the transfer.

bullet

Before the 24 hours of drying time you can cut out your transfer and place it on your gourd then mark around the edges with chalk or regular pencil.  This will give you the area outline if you need to sand the gourd surface.

bullet

Within the marked off space put on one coat of gesso, let dry.  Add one coat of white acrylic paint, let dry.

When the 24 hrs of drying time is over, mix 2 cups water with 2 drops of detergent as a wash solution.  Remove the backing paper from your photo and gently wash transfer in solution.  Rinse well and blot dry, don't wrinkle.  Paper towels work great and finish drying with a hairdryer.

bullet

Make a glue slip - I used one part Sobo glue and 1/4 part water, well mixed.

bullet

Ready to put transfer onto gourd.  For the cotton transfer:  I used a fan brush to completely coat the outlined transfer area on the gourd with the glue slip - you don't want this to dry out so work with it right away.  On the back center of your photo put some of the slip with the fan brush, you don't need to completely coat the whole pic.

bullet

Place the center of your photo onto the center of your outlined transfer area.  with your fingers start smoothing from center out toward edges.  You are getting rid of any bubbles.  If the area gets dry, dip finger into the slip and keep smoothing.

bullet

If the edges are wrinkling, snip with small scissors (like when you turn a corner) and smooth the edges out.  Keep your transfer wet while working on it.

bullet

If you get some ink spreading just gently wipe away with a tissue.  If the transfer has been washed in solution prior, this should NOT happen.  The slip mixture will dry clear.

For the silk:  I used a fan brush to completely coat the outlined transfer area on the gourd with the glue slip - you want this to stay wet while you're working on it.

bullet

Place the center of your photo onto the center of your outlined transfer area.  Dip your finger into the slip and starting in the center of your photo work out any bubbles.  If the edges wrinkle, snip with small scissors (like going around a corner) and smooth the edges flat.

bullet

If you get some ink spreading just gently wipe away with a tissue.  The slip mixture will dry clear.

If the gourd has not been sanded smooth watch for any little indent areas that could be cause for bubbles.  Finish the design of your gourd piece.  I put 3 coats of Polyurethane over the whole gourd, including picture.  Perfect!!

Some Background:  The last 4 months I've been working with all sorts of photo transfer methods.  I wanted something that when finished would look like a photo had been put onto the gourd.  I also wanted something that was easy to use, you could do it with your inkjet printer at home and not have to fight with "printer people" and pay high prices.  Some of the products were Omnigel, all three of the Lazertran papers, Avery transfer papers, T-Shirt transfer papers, and more.  I tried Turpentine, Alcohol, steam, etal.  I also used air dry clay, polymer clay cured and uncured and Cold Porcelain.  Next on my list was to find Rice Paper and unwaxed deli paper and see what the quilt people were using.  But first I got a catalog from Dharma Trading Company and just glancing in a couple pages found the Jacquard products.  Immediately I called Dharma Trading, we went over the pros and cons, I ordered the products and the rest is history.  This is the perfect product for what I was after and how I wanted it to look at the finished stage.  Have fun, check it out, and if any questions or comment, please let me know.  Dar
